SCAVENGER HUNT POST

Today I have the great pleasure of hosting my friend and follow YA author, Maureen McGowan, author of the amazing The Dust Chronicles series.

Maureen's got a super awesome treat that she's saved just for the YA Scavenger Hunt. She's revealing the brand spanking new covers for the first two books in the series, DEVIANTS and COMPLIANCE, and she's revealing, for the first time ever, the cover and blurb for the final book in the series, GLORY. How awesome is that???

Okay, so to refresh your memory, here's what DEVIANTS and COMPLIANCE used to look like:

And here are their new, amazingly beauteous updates. . . .
Praise for Deviants

“A deliciously dark, harrowing world, brightened by dazzling characters and sparkling prose.”—Kelley Armstrong, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of the Darkness Rising trilogy
“A tense thriller with a strong, beating heart at its center.”—Diana Peterfreund, author of For Darkness Shows the Stars

“McGowan launches The Dust Chronicles with a bang, painting her post-apocalyptic world with a dark brush and featuring a strong-willed and determined protagonist.”—RT Book Reviews
“Keeps the suspense throbbing . . .”—Kirkus Reviews

Praise for Compliance
Winner of the NJRW 2013 Golden Leaf Award for Young Adult Fiction
“McGowan has topped the uneasiness of Deviants' dystopian story with Compliance's psychological tension  . . .”—CanLit for LittleCanadians
“I can't wait to read what will happen next.”—Step into Fiction
“I love this series.”—The Reading Cafe

And here's the glorious, brand spanking new cover for the final book in the series, GLORY which releases on June 10, 2014...
Glory is a Deviant. That is what she was always taught, growing up in the domed city of Haven. She has the power to kill with her gaze, but she's learned to control this power and use it only against the monstrous Shredders who are addicted to the asteroid dust that mutated their DNA.

Now, living in a settlement Outside, Glory has the chance to embrace her “Gift” and reunite her remaining family. But she can’t hide from the threat of Shredder attacks or the knowledge of what Management is doing to the employees of Haven.

Can she face losing everything she has left to bring freedom to Haven? Will she choose the familiar safety of Cal’s love or risk Burn’s dangerous passion? Ultimately, Glory must decide how far she is willing to go to keep her family safe, and what it really means to be a monster.

This is the thrilling finale to The Dust Chronicles trilogy.

Be careful what you search for…
Emma Guthrie expects this summer to be like any other in the South Carolina Lowcountry--hot and steamy with plenty of beach time alongside her best friend and secret crush, Cooper Beaumont, and Emma’s ever-present twin brother, Jack. But then a mysterious eighteenth-century message in a bottle surfaces, revealing a hidden pirate bounty. Lured by the adventure, the trio discovers the treasure and unwittingly unleashes an ancient Gullah curse that attacks Jack with the wicked flesh-eating Creep and promises to steal Cooper’s soul on his approaching sixteenth birthday.
But when a strange girl bent on revenge appears, demon dogs become a threat, and Jack turns into a walking skeleton, Emma has no choice but to learn hoodoo magic to undo the hex, all before the last days of summer—and her friends--are lost forever.

Worst. Summer. Ever.
Emma Guthrie races to learn the hoodoo magic needed to break The Beaumont Curse before her marked boyfriend Cooper’s sixteenth birthday. But deep in the South Carolina Lowcountry, dark, mysterious forces encroach, conspiring to separate Emma and Cooper forever. Faced with the horror of a soul-eating boohag, Emma and Jack must fight to resist its fiendish power to free Cooper long enough to join their strengths and face it together, before it destroys them all.

Midwinter's Eve Giveaway Hop with a signed CONJURE or ALLURE Giveaway!

Hi everyone! I'm thrilled to participate in the Midwinter's Eve Giveaway Hop hosted by two of the best book blog sites around, Bookhounds and I'm a Reader Not a Writer

There are tons of prizes to be won, including a choice of a signed copy of either CONJURE or ALLURE, the first two installments in The Hoodoo Apprentice series. But before we get to my specific giveaway, I thought I'd tell you a little about my book and share a great recipe first.

My latest book, ALLURE is the second in The Hoodoo Apprentice series which features Emma Guthrie, her brother Jack, and their best friend (and Emma's boyfriend), Cooper Beaumont who use Gullah hoodoo magic to battle an ancient-soul sucking curse and a hideous monster that will stop at nothing to consume its prey.

ALLURE takes place in the South Carolina lowcountry where Spanish moss, live oaks, and dazzling beaches proliferate. It's also the home of the Gullah, descendants of freed slaves, who've lived on the sea islands for centuries. In the books, Emma apprentices herself to Miss Delia, an elderly Gullah root worker who teaches her the magic she needs to save her brother and boyfriend.

Since this is a Midwinter's Eve hop, I thought it would be the perfect time to share a traditional Gullah recipe that's perfect for this time of year. Many Gullah make Hoppin' John at New Years because it is said to bring good luck. Plus, it's a great, warm stew that sticks to your ribs during the cold winter months.

I found this recipe at Simply Recipes and made a few changes noted here in italics:
Hoppin’ John Recipe
Prep time: 10 minutes; Cook time: 50 minutes
Serves 4-6 as a side dish
Note: Many things may affect the cooking times of the peas. They could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to cook to tenderness, depending on their age, where they were grown, the water you are using.
INGREDIENTS
  • 1/3 pound bacon, or 1 ham hock plus 2 Tbsp oil (Since I don't eat red meat, I substitute either turkey bacon or a preformed turkey ham).
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 small green pepper, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 pound dried black-eyed peas, about 2 cups
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 heaping teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • Salt
  • 2 cups long-grain rice
  • Scallions or green onions for garnish, if desired
TO COOK:
1 If you are using bacon, cut it into small pieces and cook it slowly in a medium pot over medium-low heat. If you are using a ham hock, heat the oil in the pot. Once the bacon is crispy (or the oil is hot), increase the heat to medium-high and add the celery, onion, and green pepper and sauté until they begin to brown, about 4-5 minutes. Add the garlic, stir well and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
2 Add the black-eyed peas, bay leaf, thyme and Cajun seasoning and cover with 4 cups of water. If you are using the ham hock, add it to the pot and bring to a simmer. Cook for 30 minutes to an hour, or longer if needed, until the peas are tender (not mushy).
3 While the black-eyed peas are cooking, cook the rice separately according to package instructions.
4 When the peas are tender, strain out the remaining cooking water. Remove and discard the bay leaf. Taste the peas for salt and add more if needed. If using a ham hock, remove it from the pot, pull off the meat, and return the meat to the pot.
Serve the dish either by placing a ladle-full of black-eyed peas over steamed rice, or by mixing the two together in a large bowl. Garnish with chopped green onions, if desired (I don't). Serve with corn bread for an extra southern flare.
And that's it! It's super easy, very tasty, and can even be made in a slow cooker if you prefer. So if you're looking for a nutritious, delicious meal to get you through a long winter night, give Hoppin' John a try.

And now for my giveaway! I'm giving away a signed paperback copy of either CONJURE or ALLURE, winner's choice. This giveaway is open to International! To enter, just fill out the Rafflecopter thingie below:

Let's get started, shall we? I'm delighted to host the lovely and talented Joelene Perry, author of Out of Play...
Rock star drummer Bishop Riley doesn't have a drug problem. Celebrities—especially ones suffering from anxiety—just need a little help taking the edge off sometimes. After downing a few too many pills, Bishop wakes up in the hospital facing an intervention. If he wants to stay in the band, he’ll have to detox while under house arrest in Seldon, Alaska. Hockey player Penny Jones can't imagine a life outside of Seldon. Though she has tons of scholarship offers to all the best schools, the last thing she wants is to leave. Who'll take care of her absentminded gramps? Not her mother, who can’t even be bothered to come home from work, let alone deal with their new tenants next door. Penny’s not interested in dealing with Bishop’s crappy attitude, and Bishop’s too busy sneaking pills to care. Until he starts hanging out with Gramps and begins to see what he’s been missing. If Bishop wants a chance with the fiery girl next door, he’ll have to admit he has a problem and kick it. Too bad addiction is hard to kick…and Bishop’s about to run out of time.

Jolene wears juvenile t-shirts, worn out Chucks, and eats too much chocolate. She writes. A lot. She makes up words, drinks Shirley Temples, and suffocates a little without her iPod. She’s a high school teacher turned writer who loves stories about smart, tough girls, and the boys who can keep up with them. Jolene lives in Alaska with her husband, two children, awesome dog, and snarky cat.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

OUT OF PLAY is a YA contemp Jolene wrote with the mad-talented Nyrae Dawn. Jolene wrote tough girl, Penny Jones, and Nyrea wrote rockstar Bishop Riley…

This scene is one of my favs, and takes place just after one of her hockey games…

“Crowds freak you out?” I ask slowly.

“I’d rather not use the words ‘freak out.’” His eyes close again and his hands

tremble in his lap.

It’s awkward to stand in all my gear, but I also can’t leave him. “Is this where you tell me who you are? Why you’re up here renting out all the cabins even though they’d be empty anyway?”

He lets out another desperate sounding chuckle. “No.”

“I’m going to shower so I don’t stink up the truck. Oh! These were dropped off at my school. They’re from Pat.” I dig in the side pocket of the passenger door for the drumsticks and hand them over.

Bishop takes them and immediately starts twirling the sticks, still with his eyes closed and still with the weird breathing. “Nice of him.”

“I think he has a crush on you,” I tease.

“He’s cool to talk to. We’re both into music.”

They talk?

He spins the sticks a few more times before blinking and then closing his eyes again like he’s not ready to see the world. “You were wild out there, Penny. Fuck, that’s crazy, you know?”

The high from my game slams into my again, and with it comes the thought that he gets it. Or is maybe trying to. “It’s why I love it.”

He nods and keeps twirling, eyes still closed, breathing still regulated, and starts beating soft rhythms on my dash. At least he knows better than to slam those things onto Bitty.

Finally, after what feels like forever, he looks at me. “I get it…why you wanna play here and why you want to be on a guys’ team. You’re good.” And then he quickly turns away as though he said too much while I’m dying inside.

He gets it.

This guy who barely knows me gets it when no one else does. I don’t know what to say.

“Give me ten minutes to shower and get my gear. K?”

He stares at his drumsticks, letting out another slow breath and attempting a smile that looks more like a grimace, but at least he’s trying. “Want any help with I get a flash of what it would be like to have him helping me. His fingers on the skin of my shoulder, and his dark eyes staring into me the way they did the night I sat in the hot tub and he told me I could do anything. There’s a tension and a want in the nerves that course through me at my over-active imagination that I don’t know how to deal with. My cheeks flush before I can find words. “You must be feeling better.”

His eyes meet mine, and vulnerable Bishop is back. The one who makes my legs go weak. “Thanks.”

I have to exit the situation because it’s suddenly so intense I don’t know what to do. Having a guy crush on me is one thing. Having him get me and my decisions is something else entirely. This wasn’t part of my plan. “See you in ten.”
